Hubert Ogunde Memorial School was found in 1995 by Bose (Ogunde) Oloyede and the Montessori-based institution is named after her father, Chief Hubert Adedeji Ogunde, D.Lit. Dr Ogunde was a Nigerian actor, playwright, theatre manager, and musician, he found the first contemporary professional theatrical company in Nigeria, the African Music Research Party, in 1945. Hubert Ogunde changed the name to Ogunde Theater Party in 1947 and Ogunde Concert Party in 1950.
The Montessori institution opened its doors to the first set of intakes at a rented bungalow of five rooms located at Ishasi Road, Akute, Nigeria on the 15th of March 1995. The school which was designed to provide pre-school, as well as, functional primary education for children aged 2 – 10 years, had only 9 pupils at the time, and one teaching assistant.
